In 2009 the Hillandalers Snowmobile Club created a small scholarship to honor Joseph Firlotte, a long-time Winthrop resident who is one of the founders of the Hillandalers Snowmobile Club.
Mr. Firlotte was instrumental in the creation of Maine’s ITS (Inter-Connected Trail System), a snowmobile trail system that connects the more than 14,000 miles of trails built by volunteers, from over 300 local snowmobile clubs, every winter. He was also very active in the early years of the Maine Snowmobile Association and in the formation of the Maine Department of Conservation snowmobile trails program.
The scholarship is awarded each year to a Winthrop High School senior pursuing post-secondary educational goals.
Scholarship applications are reviewed and rated on academic accomplishment, extracurricular activities, and involvement in community life experiences. The club congratulates the following recipients:
